Wasted Joules are perishable jewellery made from humble materials. This anti-collection's value is derived not from durability but from the pleasure of making, wearing and returning these festive pieces to the earth. An effective misuse of excess energy.

Our society's dependence on high energy consumption and economic growth demands that any excess energy is reinvested into monetised economic projects. Since endless growth is not an option on a finite planet, excess energy should instead be expended on projects that focus on social and cultural enrichment.

Drawn to the tactile and ephemeral nature of materials Ioana looked for opportunities to further develop her curiosity in this arena. In June Ioana was selected as one of twenty designers to participate in the MaDe* (Material Designers) workshop in Barcelona where She explored the concept of social objects made from biodegradable materials.

During the workshop, She chose to work with a limited number of elements, a low energy process and an intuitive way of making. Settling on using dough made from water, salt, flour and crystals from starch, water and salt. To add colour, natural dyes such as beetroot powder, turmeric, and paprika; to create texture, tea is used. The process is slow, the pieces often dry in the sun and change shape under their own weight. The results can be delightfully unexpected.

The intention was to create temporary pieces from vulnerable materials. By relieving the pressure of existing in a distant future, the pieces can talk about the now without harming that future. The value in jewellery is often distorted by demanding it is durable in order to safeguard its potential use as capital. This colours the way it is valued, used and enjoyed. Rather than storing value, these jewels biodegrade in compost and loop back into the ecosystem. Their value is in the making process and the conversations they can generate.

The anti-collection was launched at London Design Fair along with a series of workshops and honest conversations about the role designers should play in the environmental crisis. The pieces will be available for temporary wear, only to be brought back and composted at the end of the day.

"INFECTIOUS PATTERN saw the four 12-foot windows of Wellcome’s buildings on the corner of Gower Street and Euston Road transformed with bold graphic surface designs, 3D shapes, graphic optical effects and storytelling typography. Through repetitive patterns inspired by the intricate microscopic structure of bacteria and viruses, each window tells a chapter in the story of disease: from the genesis and spread of infection and the disruption caused to the body and society, to the power that Wellcome’s research has to combat it. The centrepiece is an animated film created by PATTERNITY that interweaves fact, playful pattern animation and case study to explore the history of infectious diseases and the progress made by Wellcome in tackling them." - PATTERNITY

Chewing rocks wouldn’t usually appeal, but when they are made of daft wobbly jelly, why not indulge. Juxtaposing rare gem hors d’oeuvres, a succulent steak slab and marbled french fancies - Edible Earth series is served up with a masculine and sardonic wit mixed with a playful aesthetic challenging perceptions of the pleasures associated with food in an experimental way.

Set Design with brand awareness, making PATTERNITY'S patterns an engaging presence through a multi sensory experience.

Peepholes into an Op Art world, A reflection on yourself as pattern, step into and become the pattern, wear a cape and slide geometric shapes made of foam, wood and simply play the elastic instruments. 

When someone steps into the world you have created and interacts with the objects in space, this memory is absorbed and the work is complete.

I creatively produced this installation from conception to delivery. Very proud to see these patterns come alive through many social media platforms.
